Classes + Courses

Surface Ceramics classes are available for everyone. You are welcome to join any of our classes, whether you are a complete beginner, or you have a little more experience. We have short 2-hour sessions, day classes as well as courses 5 weeks long.

Courses are taught primarily by surface ceramics technician Robyn Walsh. We also hold classes taught by members of the studio who are professional potters.

Clay Date!

2-hour self-directed session.
Class begins with a 30 min demo on how to use studio equipment.
Learn the basics in a short self-directed session.
People with basic throwing experience can book the wheel before the workshop date. 
Returning clay daters get a £5 discount and can skip the demos getting straight to work!

Work will be ready for collection 2-4 weeks later after the final firing.

Kids hand-building

Class begins with a studio equipment demo followed by a 2-hour guided session. 
This class teaches techniques that can be used to make functional and sculptural forms.
An adult must be present for the entirety of the lesson and is encouraged to get muddy.

Work will be ready for collection 2-4 weeks later after the final firing.

Day Classes

Intro to Clay

£60 per person
A day introductory session exploring a range of hand-building techniques in depth, including traditional Japanese hand-building techniques, machine slab rolling and joining.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and improvers. 

Intro to Wheel Throwing 

£70 per person
This taster session will give you an introduction to the techniques required to throw your first successful pot. 
You should complete two simple cylindrical vessels which will be fired for you.

Intro to Glaze Formulation 

£70 per person 
Learn how to mix and apply glaze to your bisque wares. 
You will learn different methods of glaze application and learn all the tricks of the trade for seamless coverage.

Beginner Night Course

A 5-week group beginners' course is perfect if you're looking to learn a new skill in a relaxed and fun environment.

Learn the skills needed to produce your ceramic work from start to finish through a technique of your choice (hand building, throwing, or slip casting).

At the end of the 5 weeks, you will be left feeling confident in your chosen subject.

WEEK 1 - Learn to prep your clay and get to grips on the wheel
WEEK 2 - Begin to refine those skills focusing on cylinders
WEEK 3 -Trimming and handling making
WEEK 4 - Bowl Throwing and New shapes
WEEK 5 - Glazing

Hand-building

Week 1 Learn to prep your clay and get to grips with the slab roller and extruder
Week 2 Begin to refine in those skills focusing on different joining and forming techniques
Week 3 Forming different shapes, bowls, plates, sculptural or figurative forms. 
Week 4 Finishing and trimming the forms
Week 5 Glazing and surface treatment

Plaster mould-making and slip casting

Week 1 Working with plaster and mould making
Week 2 Slip formulation and making liquid clay from raw materials 
Week 3 casting 
Week 4 Finishing
Week 5 Glazing and surface treatment

Work will be ready for collection 2-4 weeks later after the final firing.

Masterclass night course

This 4-week intermediate course is perfect if you're looking to learn how the materials, we use in ceramics work to form clays and glazes. This course will teach you how to make your own glazes from scratch.

Traditional Glaze formulation 

Week 1 - Understanding glaze recipes
Week 2 - Mix the elements of a basic glaze 
Week 3 - Make line blends and tri-axle blends.
Week 4 - Use your new glaze formulations to glaze up to 20 test tiles that are provided or apply them to your bisque work.
